Frequently Asked Questions:

After reading about classic and modern Ju Jitsu, having looked at the pictures in the gallery page including the technique archive, visited our forum and maybe even asked a few questions there, you may have reached the conclusion that you would like to study the martial art of Ju Jitsu.

We have collected a number of frequently asked questions that are usually asked by beginners, and we hope that the answers will be of help:

Does one have to be fit in order to train?

Fitness will be acquired during training, so there is no need to spend hours running and doing sit ups and push ups, although fitness is essential for any sport and the more one is fit, the better.

Can one come for a trial lesson?

Of course! It is also recommended in order to check if it is the style you are looking for, and to see if you are in rapport with the instructors. Only after you have thoroughly checked the club and it is to your liking, should you enroll.

Should I have a ju-jitsu uniform already for the first lesson?

It is not advised to buy a gi (this is how the uniform is called) immediately. Wait a month and see if you are enjoying yourself and then invest in the official gi from your club.

How can I train as a novice together with experienced students?

Actually it is preferable to train with someone more experienced than yourself because he/she can direct and correct you and therefore be saved from unnecessary injuries.

Besides, your instructor will direct you according to your personal standard and not according to the more experienced trainees.

I am 15 / 30 / 55 years old. Is this the right age to start?

As long as you are medically fit, there is no reason why not to train (and many reasons why yes...). Age is not a factor when it comes to martial arts and the level is adapted to your physical condition.

My daughter is 8 years old. Are there groups for girls only? Is it possible that it would be too difficult to train with boys?

Boys and girls (such as men and women) train together because it is important to understand the physical differences between the genders. Infact girls generally prefer training together with boys.

We must remember that martial arts are not ballet, and there is a possibility of injury. However, much care is taken by the instructors in addition to many safety rules in order that injuries will not happen.

When will I be graded for yellow belt? How long does it take to study for a black belt?

One is graded when one is ready. The focus should be on improving your style, knowledge and abilities, but don't worry: when the time will come, you will be tested and (hopefully) graded.

Your instructors teach according to an international syllabus, and you must know that there is a necessary minimal time limit between each belt.

I train / have trained in the past in karate / judo / self defence etc. Can ju-jitsu enhance my knowledge?

Yes, definitely. Ju Jitsu is a martial that contains almost every aspect of self defence: from kicking to punching, throws, locks, escapes from strangles and holds and also ground techniques.

One that learns Ju Jitsu will always find in it something that appeals to him most and can concentrate on that aspect depending on age, height and agility.
