January 2005 Technique:

  Tying the belt

It is very imprtant to wear the gi and to tie the belt correctly. It is a part of our martial arts training.

In the sequence of pictures below you can find two methods of doing it. Each method is devided to two parts:

  • Wrapping the belt around the hips.

  • Tying the belt.

We've devided it to two methods, but one can wrap the belt around the hips using one method, and finish the tying using the other method.

* Thanks for sensei Yonah Melnik for teaching us the second method.

The pants are tied.

The upper part of the gi is dressed, left wing on the right wing.

The belt is ready to be tied.

First method, a simple one:
1. Find the center of the belt.
2. Put it in the middle of your belly.
3. Wrap the belt around your hips. Each end of the belt should be wrapped to the other side.
This is how it looks from behind: the two parts of the belt are overllaping each other.

4. Take one end of the belt and put it on the other.

5. Take the upper end and and slide it under the belt close to the belly.

Verify that the two ends are in the same length.

6. Take the upper end of the belt, put it on the lower end, and finish the tying.

7. Now the belt is tied and the ends are in the same length.

Second method, a tighter one:
1. Separate the belt into 1/3-2/3.
2. Put it infront of your belly and start wrapping the belt.
3. Finish one wrap...
4. And continue wrapping another time.
5. After two wraps the two ends are in front, one over the other.
Zoom:
6. This is how it looks from behind: the two wraps are exactly one on the other.
Zoom:
7. Take the upper end, put behind the belt close to the belly and tighten it. Make sure the two ends are in the same length.
Zoom:
8. Take the upper end and put in between the two wraps on the other side.
Zoom:
9. Take the lower end, turn it and put it inside the loop the other end has just created.
Zoom:
10. ...And put it between the two wraps on that side.

11. Tighten the belt. Now the belt is tied with a strong and flat knot, and the two ends of the belt are in the same length.
